Myth, History, and Music in the Creation of the Excavated Bamboo Guicang 歸藏 Hexagram Text

Curriculum vitae

A scholar of Chinese BC Era excavated text since the late 1970s (PhD, UC, Berkeley 1990), I have focused on bronze inscriptions with primary interests in religious, social, and regional practices (see, for example, Defining Chu: Image and Reality in Ancient China, Ed. With J. Major, 1999; “Education and the Way of the Former Kings.” In Feng Li & David Branner, ed. Literacy in Ancient China; “Ancestor worship during the Eastern Zhou.” In John Lagerwey & Marc Kalinowski, ed. Early Chinese Religion: Part One: Shang through Han (1250 BC-220 AD), 2009; “Moonshine and Millet: Feasting and Purification Rituals in Ancient China.” In Roel Sterckx, ed. Of Tripod and Palate: Food and Religion in Traditional China, 2005). In the early 1990s, I began to publish studies on bamboo texts, including those dedicated for divination, sacrifice, and mortuary ritual (see, for example, Death in Ancient China: The Tale of One Man’s Journey, 2006; “ The Ambiguity of Text, Birth and Nature,” Dao 12 (2013) 2: 161-78; “From Bone to Bamboo: Number Sets and Mortuary Ritual.” Journal of Oriental Studies 41.1: 1-40; “Myth and Fragments of a Qin Yi text: A Research Note and Translation.” Journal of Chinese Religions 26 (1998): 135-143).
